Tools In Job Searches

I don’t know about how your life has been going since the economic slowdown. Hard times have befallen people for lots of reasons from losing jobs to having their mortgage foreclosed. I wasn’t spared the hardships then the maple syrup plant I had been working at was shut down and I was laid off. It’s been pretty tough, but I know a lot of people have had it worse so I really can’t complain. Anyway ever since I lost my job I’ve been searching and trying to find something to fill the gap. The other day I figured I’d consult the Internet and searched “video games for sale” into google. I was surprised that so many results came up, but I suppose the job market is big business in these times.

The first job that caught my eye was one that was looking for people to sell stock trading software. I looked at the job requirements and sadly it was a bit more then I could do. They wanted someone with past experience installing floors and I definitely don’t have that. Heck I haven’t even lifted a hammer in like 10 years. I wasn’t disheartened and kept looking for more jobs on the net.

Next I decided I should look for jobs I’m more qualified for. I began my search by narrowing it down to only jobs in middle level management or I figured I might even take an administrative assistant job. To my delight there were a lot of that type of job being posted on the net. Originally I figured since there were so many people out of work one would be hard to come by. I checked these jobs out and the only real disappointment was that I am used to making more than the jobs paid.

I sent out applications to around 15 of the places I found on the internet and waited to hear back from them. Just around 2 weeks later (when I was starting to worry that no one was going to call) I heard back from 2 of the places in the same day. Naturally I was quite excited and did my best to prepared and get looking good for my job. Sadly my first job interview didn’t the way I had hoped it would. I’d attribute that to mostly nerves, coupled with the fact that I hadn’t done a job interview in so long. The new interviews went a lot better and I really thought something could come from it. Yesterday I heard back from the place and I got the job! I was so glad that it worked out. In a week or so I start at my new job and I am so excited.

5 Tips to Improve Your Job Hunt Online

There are a ton of career resources available online that allow for a comprehensive job search. Use these five job searching tips to get the most out of your online job hunt and land your dream job faster.

Job Searching Tip 1: Use Job Notification Agents

Many online job boards like Monster, Careerbuilder and Jobing give you the option to conduct a job search on a regular basis and have the results of those agents emailed to you. These emails provide an easy way to stay abreast of jobs currently available, whether you are an active job seeker or just want to know what job options are available.

Job Searching Tip 2: Apply With Care

Apply only to jobs that you are truly qualified or interested in. It is easy to just start submitting to every job possibility without considering how well the job would fit you.  Resist the temptation. Human resource professionals are very busy people, and who knows - the same HR person may have another job posted that is actually right for you - the next day!  Applying to jobs indiscriminately sends a poor message about the focus of your job search and the quality of your candidacy.

Job Searching Tip 3: Tailor Your Resume

Research the companies that you apply to and tailor your cover letters and resumes to fit the jobs and the positions you are applying for. A great way to impress a hiring manager is to help them easily understand how you will fit into their company culture and excel at the job your are applying for. Thoroughly review the job posting, pay the company website a visit, read the company profile and view their employment video. Doing your company research really pays off.

Job Searching Tip 4: Find What Works

Use a variety of different job boards and career resources at first and find out what works best for you.  After a while you will be able to tell which is the best resource for you in your location and career field of interest. The big job boards like Monster and Career Builder are good for searching a wide variety of jobs. If you are unwilling to relocate then you may want to keep your job search local with job boards like Jobing and Simply Hired. Job sites like Jobs In the Money and Marketing Crossing cater to professionals based on their career field of interest. Once you find what works best for your job search you can begin to budget your time accordingly.

Job Searching Tip 5: Keep Your Resume Fresh

Keep updating your resume. When job hunting, notice the last date the position was posted. You might even consider filtering your job search results to only view the freshest jobs around. Similarly, recruiters often search through resume databases perusing for job candidates that have recently updated their info. Keeping your information current tells employers:

a.  You are actively looking for new employment – now.
b.  Your contact and employment information is current.
c.  You are ready to interview, and even start your new job on a reasonable timetable.

Whatever career resources you use or advice you receive, remember there is no magic bullet to finding a job you’ll love.Your job search is a process that demands patience, persistance, discipline and flexibility to constantly improve your approach.

(Updated: 5/9/2008 6:19 PM)

While testing on the integrity of the database and code on Great School Jobs has gone well, we have identified a security vulnerabily with the Great School Jobs website that may allow a malicious attacker to erase data from the site. Due to these security threats, Solutionwhere has decided to temporarily take GreatSchoolJobs.com offline for detailed evaluation and enhancement.

We will be working on the site throughout the weekend in an effort to get it ready in the most timely fashion possible. We promise to have the site back up so that you may quickly resume your teaching job search, administrative job search, or other school job related search with our site.

Tips on Writing Resumes and Job Applications

Nowadays, online resources make it much easier for college graduates to search for jobs and start working on a career that will enable them to achieve their dreams in life. The World Wide Web gives easy and convenient access to various job search sites and online career advices. With the technology we have today, it is much more easy and quick to get hired and paid. By just entering keywords in search engines, you are being exposed to hundreds and thousands of possible employers and with just a click of a button, you are on your way to getting the job you desire.

But even with all the information that can be obtained online, some college students still find it hard to begin a career after graduation. There may be several explanations here but the major reason why some graduates still find it hard is because they do not know where to begin. If you are a college graduate seeking a job, then you have probably asked yourself these questions - What do I want to do for a living? What type of company do I want to work for? Am I willing to relocate?

Tough questions? Perhaps. But every journey starts with a first step, which in our case would be to make a first impression through writing a perfect resume. Here are some great tips on how to write your perfect resume.

  • Before writing your resume, you have to take into consideration the type of job you are applying for. Think of specific keywords that your employer might search for in your resume. Here are some examples:
  1. Ability to (uphold, delegate, supervise, etc.)
  2. Analytical ability
  3. Detail oriented
  4. Problem solving skills
  5. Result driven
  6. Communication skills
  7. Team leader
  • Personalize your resume:
  1. Create a positive first impression. Showcase your communication skills and make sure your resume is easy to read. In most cases you won’t get a second chance to impress the employer so you better do it right the first time.
  2. Tell who you are. Inform the reader about your most prominent qualifications and why they should hire you for the job. Bear in mind, however, that there is no need to lie. Most, if not all, of the employers out there prefer an honest resume to keep them from setting expectations far greater than what you are capable of.
  3. Describe what you have learned. It is undertandable that fresh graduates such as yourself do not have any work experience. In this case, it is best to highlight the courses, seminars and projects that you have conducted, participated in and attended.
  4. Make a list of your achievements. It is best to put modesty on the backseat at this point. Show your employer the achievements and awards you have acquired in the past and list them down accordingly.
  • After writing your resume make sure to:
  1. Adjust and edit as needed.
  2. Print out the resume that you have created to see how it would look like on paper.
  3. Always bring your resume to a job interview so you can leave a copy if needed.

After writing your resume, do not limit yourself to just one job application. Give yourself options. It’s a big wide world and there are plenty of places to start your career. UK, for one, offers many opportunities for fresh graduate students to begin their career. It is best to choose an environment that suits you and colleagues that you see yourself working well with at the early stages of your career to avoid regrets later on. It is quite vital that you get on track right from the start.

Whether it is Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals, Industrial and Engineering, Banking and Finance, Technology or any other sector, graduate jobs in the UK prove to be the best starting point for one’s career. Considering that fresh graduates do not have work experiences, the UK job market has various great job opportunities from top companies opened for them. Why settle for unpaid experiences when you can get hired and paid by top companies, adding up work experience as you travel down the road of your chosen career?

Whatever sector you choose in the UK; from graduate jobs in sales, graduate jobs in retail, graduate management jobs, graduate consultancy jobs or graduate leisure and travel jobs, you got to choose the ultimate resource for discovering your future. It is imperative to gain knowledge about leading companies, industry news, emerging sectors, salary terms and much more, so you can make an educated decision.
